U-evolve is a mental health charity who provides therapeutic support to young people in Edinburgh. As a charity who supports young people, it is crucial that we understand what it is that young people need when it comes to mental health. That’s where you come in! Young Voices Starts: 30th April 2024 Every 2 weeks Tuesdays: 4.45-6.15pm 5 weeks minimum (with the option to continue) This will be a group of young people who meet once a week and help shape the important work which U-evolve does to support young people’s mental health in Edinburgh. Young people will be able to share their experiences of mental health support in a safe space and help advise the charity on what can be done by professionals to best support young people today. This will be a brilliant opportunity for young people who are passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people in Edinburgh and will give valuable work experience towards future employment. Job details We are looking for volunteers who have strong IT skills and have experience using online platforms such as Teams and Zoom. Assisting in the delivery of online sessions to Corporate Parents, ensuring technical and minor issues are dealt with in real time. Helping to monitor and moderate chat. Call out for volunteers for Leith Festival Gala Day on Saturday 8th June 2024 on Leith Links! We need a team of 40 volunteers in total, to set up, run the day, then close down. It’s a long day from 7am to 7pm but volunteers can choose their shifts from 2 to 7 hours. It’s a very interesting day with many different volunteer roles so even a small corporate team would make a huge difference for our year round small team of existing volunteer organisers. Volunteer tasks include stewarding, traffic management, assist stall holders, litter picking, moving chairs etc. Also, volunteers for the Information Tent from 10am till 5pm, answering queries, directing to stalls, security and first aid communications. Ward Helper (Midlothian Community Hospital) Midlothian Community Hospital provides 88 beds across several wards. These wards provide rehabilitation (over 60s), continuing care of frail elderly, palliative/end of life care, dementia care, and mental health care. The role Volunteers are needed to support the wards in the following ways: chat to patients to provide mental stimulation and reduce boredom; serve teas and coffees to patients; top up patients’ water jugs; distribute food to patients at mealtimes; support the cleaning up of dishes and cutlery; interact with patient visitors; help out with any ad-hoc tasks on the ward as directed by staff. Volunteer support is appreciated at any time during the day, but particularly over breakfast, lunch, and dinner. These are busy times on the wards where volunteer support would be most valuable. Person specific We are looking for volunteers who are kind, compassionate, and empathetic. You must also have strong verbal communications skills and be able to connect with people easily. Being reliable and punctual is extremely important. Minimum commitment Volunteers must be ready to commit to 2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. If volunteers wish to stay longer than this, we would be very happy to have you stay on. Training The induction training is provided over Microsoft Teams and will involve attending two sessions lasting approximately 2 hours each. Writing Mentor We are looking for writing mentors to support young people in our workshops to get inspired by writing and to boost their confidence. You do not have to be a writer to become a mentor, just lots of enthusiasm for working, patience and passion. Super Power Agency volunteers come from every walk of life. Some want to give back to their local community, others want to gain experience working with children and some just want to help out! About Super Power Agency Founded in 2016, The Super Power Agency aims to improve the lives and literacy rates of some of Edinburgh's most under-resourced young people. Through a range of writing workshops, interdisciplinary creative programmes and the help of community volunteers, we aim to empower children and young people (8-18 years) through literacy. We are currently working with Leith Academy, with plans to expand to other schools and youth-serving organisations in Edinburgh and beyond. Experience Required There are no set skills we require except patience, enthusiasm and passion. A good level of written and spoken English is also desirable. School Mentor Role Description What? We are looking for volunteer mentors who support young people at one of the high schools we are currently working with (see below). As a mentor, you would be matched to a S2-S4 (12-15 years) young person from one of the schools. Where? Craigroyston Community High School (Muirhouse/Pilton), St Thomas of Aquins High School (near The Meadows) or Leith Academy (in Leith). Depending on the mentees preference and level of comfort, mentoring sessions could take place inside the school building or in a nearby public setting such as a café, a library, or a park. When and how long for? 3-12 months – 1 hour weekly; although this will be flexible and may fluctuate to meet school timetables and mentor availability. Mentors will have to be available to meet with the young person within school hours so a degree of flexibility and availability during the day is essential. (Core hours: 9 to 15:00) What does Project Scotland do? Across Scotland we support people (primarily young people) to reach their potential through tailored support, mentoring and volunteering. You can support your local ‘I Bike’ team with outdoor activities for children and young people at a school in your area. The activities you can help with could include: teaching children and young people how to cycle or scoot doing school playground cycle skills activities leading cycle rides or walks in your area near the school showing how to look after and repair a cycle helping with the maintenance of bikes (training provided). And much more! Volunteering is flexible. Just let us know in your application if there are certain activities or tasks that you would like to do.
