Job Description

Key Details

  • JOB TITLE: Museum Session Leader
  • LOCATION: Edinburgh
  • HOURS: Part-time
  • WORKING PATTERN: This is a zero-hour contract. We ask you to average two sessions per week during term time, though this depends on demand. Sessions usually run 9:30 – 13:30/14:00, Monday – Thursday, with limited Friday and Saturday work.

About this Opportunity

The Museum on the Mound was set up as the corporate museum of Bank of Scotland (now part of Lloyds Banking Group). It tells the story of money in all its shapes and forms, the history of banking, and the advent of building societies and life assurance. Our Education Service delivers both hands-on money-based activity sessions for visiting school groups, and facilitated digital workshops for groups unable to visit. Both provide an engaging and interdisciplinary approach to the subject.

This key role is to work with groups of school pupils to deliver themed sessions on money. These are usually P4-S1, but we get groups from nursery age to young adult with a mix of abilities.

You’ll deliver in-person and digital workshops to a wide range of age-groups and abilities; take the lead role and deliver introductions to visits as required.

The sessions explore: unusual currencies from around the world, coins, banknotes, and keeping money safe. Duties will involve: welcoming groups, setting up material in advance and packing away at the end, supervising the handling of original artefacts, encouraging and motivating pupils to take part in discussion, providing feedback to the Museum team. A typical on-site session will last approximately 4 hours and require delivering the same session three times. Sessions are usually run 9:30 – 13:30/14:00.  Facilitated Digital workshops last 30 – 60 minutes each, but usually several runs in a day. These require to present to a class over Teams, though the class will have been sent several items to interact with during the session.

We’ll also need you to prepare and tidy up after each session, deliver informal learning such as coin-striking or Science Festival sessions to public outside of term time and provide cover for our Museum Reception Desk and Giftshop/Till as required.
