Role Description – Capital Sci-Fi Con Event Support and Marketing Volunteer
Capital Sci-Fi Con is one of the most exciting events in the CHAS fundraising calendar. The annual event attracts significant media attention and volunteering on this project promotes the convention which raises vital funds to help CHAS support and care for families of babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions.
What activities will I be involved in?
- Assisting with marketing the event by researching new platforms to promote the event on and help increase the number of attendees.
- Overseeing the event social media and creating a schedule of engaging posts.
- Assisting with office-based event prep, including sourcing prizes for the event’s raffle and tombola, researching guest and prop opportunities, preparing materials, and other general administrative tasks.
- Assisting with volunteer recruitment and creating volunteer rotas for the event.
- Representing Capital Sci-Fi Con and CHAS at the event.
What skills and abilities will I need to have?
- An understanding of events, events marketing, and an enthusiasm to learn more and promote CHAS and Capital Sci-Fi Con
- Excellent IT skills
- Strong communicator
- Patience, empathy and tact
- An ability to represent CHAS enthusiastically and appropriately
- Adhere to rules around GDPR and a strong understanding of confidentiality
- An ability to relate to people of all ages
How much time should I offer?
The project will run from October until mid-February, after the event has taken place (21-22 February). It will be a part-time position and can be flexible to fit around other commitments.
Where is the opportunity based?
At our Head Office, Canal Court, 42 Craiglockhart Drive, Edinburgh, EH14 1LT.
What ongoing learning/support/guidance will I receive?
It’s important to us that you feel happy, safe and confident in your role. As a CHAS volunteer you will be invited to complete a short core learning package that is tailored to your role – your learning will include representing CHAS, Using IT in CHAS and basic health and safety. You can choose to learn as part of a group or complete the learning online. The learning won’t take up much time and will equip you with the skills you need to undertake your role safely and confidently.
We are always developing new opportunities for volunteers to learn and offer a range of options for volunteers.
All volunteers are assigned a supervisor – this person will be your point of contact and will meet with you on a regular basis to provide you with support and guidance.

What are the benefits to the children and families supported by CHAS?
Effective PR will enable CHAS to raise awareness across Scotland, leading to increased donations. This will enable us to support even more families who need our care and support.
What else should I know?
This role is for those aged 16+.
We will pay your out of pocket expenses in line with the CHAS volunteer expenses policy.
