Job Description

Roles would be based in Tranent and Prestonpans.

This is a unique opportunity to improve personal development and build confidence.  It is ideal for someone looking to gain experience working with families who have young babies.  Volunteers will be provided with an invaluable training programme in order to obtain the skills required for this role.

Volunteers would be expected to attend all the scheduled training in order to become a volunteer instructor.  This would include completing 1:1 and group practical sessions, learning how to assist, advise and provide guidance through the delivery of  baby massage and knowledge to be able to have group discussions about sleep, weaning and child brain development.

Training for this role is over 5 days, 4 upfront days and a 5th day of a reflective learning and assessment.  There is also some home study required.  The 4 days of training will provide the volunteer with sound knowledge of our A Good Start Programme and how to practice and teach safely.  It will enable volunteers to carry out individual and group sessions with parents and babies.

After completion of the training the volunteer would be required to commit to deliver all session dates on 3 courses to a minimum of 10 parents and 10 babies in year 1 and a further 2 courses post qualification.  The volunteer would be expected to compile a personal portfolio, keep a reflective diary..  The volunteer would participate in regular support and supervision and attend volunteer support and training meetings at least once each year.  It is important for volunteers to respect confidentiality within Midlothian Sure Starts framework.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with families in a relaxed and supportive environment.  Someone who is caring and reliable would suit this role. It is also important that they understand the importance of confidentiality within the group and to be consistent as well as punctual.  It is important the volunteer is able to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries within the volunteering relationship and to be accepting, understanding and non-judgmental.

Volunteers will be reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses, this would be discussed with them at the informal stage and at the recruitment process.
