Job Description
Edinburgh International Film Festival is looking for a number of Submissions Viewers to help to select films for the festival.
Forming a key part of the Festival’s Programming team, Submissions Viewers support the selection of films for the EIFF programme by watching and reviewing film submissions received from all over the world via EIFF’s open submissions process. This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced film industry professionals interested in programming for a prestigious international film festival. This is an intensive role for self-employed consultants and is not a beginner-level position. It requires dedication, tenacity, a professional gaze and the ability to appraise a broad range of work with artistic, cultural and technical understanding of the medium, together with a real passion for film and cinema. Along with the other submissions viewers, you will be required to spend several hundred hours viewing films over a relatively short period of time, and promptly writing pertinent critical reviews of each film in line with EIFF’s artistic policy and guidelines. You will need to be a motivated self-starter, with strong communication and time-management skills and the ability to work to deadlines when working independently. EIFF Submission Viewers come from a variety of backgrounds within the industry. The current team includes writers, directors, producers, script consultants, film tutors and film critics. This is a demanding role that requires real commitment, however if you are passionate about film and film criticism, and interested in world cinema in all its forms, it is an immensely rewarding and richly engaging position.
During the Festival itself (17th – 28th June 2020) post holders will have opportunities to see films and attend events, and have access to EIFF’s Industry Centre and Industry Events programme. While the submissions process finishes at least six weeks before the Festival, there may be opportunities to assist in a different capacity during the Festival.
The role is offered on a self-employed basis with the work beginning in November 2019 and continuing until early April 2020. The fee to watch and review films (between 100-400 films, depending on the position) is £800. The deadline for the application is 20 October.
Please apply with your CV and 1 page cover letter, explaining why you think you are a suitable candidate and giving us an overview of your cinematic interest and tastes. Also, please attach 2 film reviews of your chosen films (max. 150 words each).
The applications can be sent to Marzena D’Arcy: marzena.d’arcy@cmi-scotland.co.uk, subject: submission viewer, specifying which position you would like to be considered for (Feature or Short Film or both).
