About SASCS

SASCS is a charitable, not for profit organisation, which provides breakfast, after school and holiday services to children and their families.  SASCS operates from the dining hall, of Sciennes Primary School – only a short walk across the meadows from George Square.  A group of parents, with children attending Sciennes Primary School set up SASCS and it began operating in August 1995.  Overall management of the scheme continues, via a friendly and active Parent Management Committee with daily operations the responsibility of SASCS experienced Management Team. The Care Inspectorate registers SASCS to care for up to 85 children every day.  Children aged 4.5 to 12+ years attend our services throughout the year.

The after school and breakfast clubs play a key role in the school community.  Sciennes Primary School is a lively, friendly and diverse school, recognised as a UNESCO Rights Respecting School. It is one of the largest primary schools in the city, benefiting from a strong sense of community.

What we do

SASCS operates a structured schedule and activity programme every day, offering children a range of staff supervised and staff delivered activities. We provide a range of outdoor activities to the children year round regardless of the weather.  We have a wide range of activity materials, resources and equipment, which are, used to support the delivery of inside and outside activities for the children.

SASCS Staff Team

We have a large staff team of, currently, 22 staff to support the services we provide.  SASCS staff team consists of a variety of individuals, who bring, to our organisation, a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, experience and skills, all of which contribute to our successful team and the delivery of the high quality childcare that we provide.

Who we are looking for

We are looking to employ energetic, enthusiastic and fun individuals as Part Time Play Workers to join our busy team and support our after school club service.

Experience of working with Primary School Aged children would be advantageous but is not essential.  It is important that new staff joining our team have a willingness to learn from their time working at the scheme and a genuine interest in being part of a high quality childcare environment.

It is ESSENTIAL that all candidates applying for this position recognise that the nature of this work involves working throughout City of Edinburgh Council Term Time Dates.  The school’s academic year commences, for SASCS, on Tuesday 16th August 2022 with a whole staff meeting.  The end of the academic year is Wednesday 28th June 2023 (according to the council website at this time).

 

What you will do

Part Time After School Club Play Workers will work within our established team to provide after school care for up to 85 children each day. This includes being involved in our set up/tidy up schedules, offering activities such as art and crafts, science, baking, outdoor games, sports, etc. and general supervision of children’s play (activities can be based on the interests of staff and interests/requests from children).

Hours of Work

In order to offer the service we provide SASCS staff team complete set up/briefing meeting and tidy up/evaluation meeting each day before and after the children’s attendance. Therefore, the hours staff are required to work are as follows:

We are looking for Part Time Staff to work a minimum of 2 days up to a maximum of 4 days each week during the City of Edinburgh Council’s school term dates.

All staff working at the scheme have the option to work during our Holiday Services, which take place throughout the academic year.

 

Starting your position at SASCS

 

As this position involves working with children our part time staff complete a 4 week (part time) induction period during which they shadow a member of staff and become familiar with our staff team, resources storage, the children, our daily schedule, the activities we offer, to name but a few.  This induction period is intended to prepare you for taking this role on a permanent basis at the beginning of the academic year (for schools), commencing Tuesday 16th August 2022.  It is, expected that all successful candidates for Part Time positions will complete this induction period of 4 weeks between Monday 25th April and Friday 1st July 2022.

 

It may be possible for 1 or 2 of our new part time staff to take on their position permanently straight after the induction period, of 4 weeks, although this would entail working some 8.30am to 5.30pm shifts during our Summer Holiday Service which takes places throughout the month of July 2022.

 

 

Rates of Pay

SASCS offers competitive rates of pay for their staff and Play Workers hourly rate of pay is £10.25 per hour.

SASCS offers all staff access to a workplace pension in line with current statutory guidance.

Following 6 month’s working at SASCS Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration is required and we will pay the initial registration costs.

Annual Leave entitlement is 5.6 weeks and for part time staff this is an average of hours worked on a weekly basis throughout the year.

We assign all new staff members an experienced staff mentor to support them through the induction and settling period, after which SASCS staff team, work closely to support each other.

We offer a wide range of in-house training sessions, along with external training opportunities to support staff in their continuing professional development.

Tea, coffee and other soft drinks, along with a variety of snacks are available for staff every day.
