JOB OVERVIEW

The role of the Kitchen Assistant is to help prep and execute dishes, according to menu, to a high standard and within a timely manner for our customers within our Kitchen Residency at Fierce Edinburgh. The team is lead by our fantastic Kitchen Manager, Rachael, who joined us at the inception of Smoke and Soul Edinburgh, bringing her “happy staff, happy kitchen” motto into our business; along with many years’ experience managing busy kitchens. Our menu is in large part made from scratch by our team – so the role is predominantly a blend of prep work pre-service and putting dishes together during service for our in-house and takeaway orders.
Our kitchen is currently open Wed-Fri evenings 4.30-8.30 and Sat/Sun 12-9pm; however we are hoping to increase our service hours and move to 7 days in the coming months. There will be opportunities to take on additional hours as the business grows and/or work alongside us at off-site events.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Food preparation and delivery during serving hours (and off-site catering events if/when required) • Follow instructions in preparing, cooking and portioning according to our recipes/menu • Undertake basic cooking duties, following our own recipes and preparing fresh vegetables, ingredients etc • Ensure all food and other items are stored properly & no cross contamination exists • Prepare, set up and clear counters in the service areas of the kitchen for start of service and clean down • Help us maintain a clean and orderly kitchen by washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces & comply with food safety and hygiene guidelines • Cleaning the food preparation equipment, floors and other kitchen tools or areas • Disposing of rubbish, recycling and food-waste in the designated areas • Escalate any HSE, staff or other issues to the team lead/ manager for resolution • Represent the business at all times in a professional and positive manner, providing excellent service – both to customers and delivery drivers

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• The ideal candidate will have worked in a kitchen or with food previously and share a genuine passion for cooking/food • Food Hygiene Level 1 & 2 certificate desired, but training will be available • Previous experience in fast-paced, customer service roles • Be able to follow instructions and use your own initiative when working alone • Good communication skills – this is vital during busy serving times • A great work ethic and attitude – ability to work well in a team • The ability to react quickly to new environments and situations • Ability to work efficiently and keep calm, under pressure
