Greenside After School Club
Playworker required for Greenside After School Club in central Edinburgh, Leith area. Hours during term-time 3-6 Mondays to Thursdays, Fridays 12-4. Holiday clubs (6 weeks per year) hours vary between 8.30 – 6pm daily. Pay – £10.50 per hour. Start date asap from 6th June.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, responsible playworker to join the team providing after school and some holiday care for primary children from schools in central Edinburgh.
The role requires picking up young children from school with another member of staff and escorting them to the premises. This role is dependent on being punctual and reliable as children cannot be left waiting for staff at the school and child/adult ratios must be maintained at all times.
Once at the club staff are on a rota of making snack and answering the door to parents/carers, supervising/organising big games and play spaces in the large hall, organising a weekly art/ craft project every 4 weeks. You will be involved in planning and evaluating activities with the team and children.
Equipment and boxes of toys must be cleared away as it is a shared space, requiring a reasonable level of fitness.
We do not have our own outdoor space so go to the local park daily, requiring a high level of supervision on play equipment and in other areas of the park.
During holiday clubs and 5 school in service days we operate from 8.30 – 6pm and you will be required to work additional hours during these times which will vary week to week. We run holiday clubs during February half term week, Easter 2 weeks holidays and the first 3 weeks of summer holidays. We are closed for October half term, Christmas 2 weeks school holidays and the last 3 weeks of summer holidays. We are also closed for all Edinburgh public holiday Mondays. You are expected to take your paid holidays during these times. Paid holidays amount to 6 full weeks plus Edinburgh public Holiday Mondays and, depending on the school calendar dates, around 2 – 4 more additional days at the end of the summer and Christmas holidays!
Candidates will preferably have previous experience of working with children and will be required to have a PVG disclosure check. Two suitable references must be provided.
It is desirable to have paediatric first aid training, child protection training and food hygiene level 2 training or if you do not hold these certificates they must be started as soon as possible. These are all short, 2-3 hr online courses, with the exception of paediatric 1st Aid which takes around 6 hrs and must be attended in person. We encourage staff to undertake further learning opportunities around playwork and childcare.
Above all the successful candidate will be reliable, responsible and have a passion for working with children and providing a stimulating, fun environment for them to enjoy their free time after a long school day!
