Job Description

Part-time: 25 hours; 8:00am-1:00pm; Mondays to Fridays.
Term-time only from August 2021.
Temporary for one year in the first instance.

This is an interesting and varied one-to-one role for someone who is keen to support a child to engage positively within the Early Years Preschool environment and within small group settings, so that there is a successful induction to life in St George’s for preschool year and future transitions.

We would like to hear from you if you have demonstrable experience of supporting and working with children with special educational needs. Flexibility within your week to increase your hours as our pupil’s capacity to access the curriculum increases would be of interest although not essential. We are especially open to applications from candidates who have a genuine interest in developing their proven experience of supporting the educational, personal and social support needs of a child with Down’s syndrome.

Duties and Responsibilities

The postholder will support a named child with Down’s syndrome to access the curriculum from nursery, preschool stage. The post is for one year in the first instance.
The Pupil Support Assistant will work closely in a team with the nursery Class Teacher, Early Years Practitioners, other adults in the room and with additional Junior School staff. This may include undertaking daily tasks of educational, personal and social care and support for the named child, alongside some administrative support for the same named child.

Purpose of Job
▪ To contribute to the delivery of the curriculum and to provide a service compatible with good practice in the education and care of the named child within the policies and systems laid down by the School;
▪ To contribute to the pastoral care of the named child and for providing support in monitoring and recording their overall developmental milestones and progress;
▪ To help promote a stimulating environment which balances education and care for the named child, meeting their individual needs and those of their family, enabling the named child to achieve their full potential.
▪ In keeping with current nursery good practice, to report to the parents on a daily basis with the highlights of the day and targets to work towards.

Key Duties and Tasks

Daily Support to the Named Child:
▪ To provide daily one-to-one support to a child which will include:
Supporting the high-quality teaching, learning and pastoral needs of the child.
Supporting and implementing structured, evidence-based interventions and Individual Learning Plans for the child.
Assisting and supervising the child during online and in-person screening and diagnostic work where appropriate.
Promoting interaction within small groups which include the child, using and making tailored differentiated programmes of work under the guidance of the nursery Class Teacher, and adapting the timetable as required.
To ensure promotion of inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom, encouraging children to interact and work cooperatively with others and engage with all activities.
Provide positive feedback and effective assessment for individualised learning for the child, developing an understanding of how to motivate and encourage the individual child to develop independent learning and social skills, alongside a supervised awareness of risk and personal safety.
To support the verbal language and communication abilities of the child with other children and adults. This includes a comfortable knowledge of sign language, or a willingness to learn this skill.
